Absolutely Unbelievable(?) Public Liability Insurance Claims

We are living in a very money grabbing society, and some people are desperate to make a quick buck by any means possible. Sometimes this involves bending the line between morality and legality in order to squeeze money from a company, which in all honesty should never be held responsible. Some high profile public liability insurance claims have been made against companies for the most outrageous reasons, and it seems like people are shameless in trying to blame others for their own mishaps.

• One man successfully managed to sue an electrical company, after he fell down a large man hole that was left uncovered by the side of the road. You would think that anyone would be capable of noticing a meter wide hole in front of them, but apparently not. He ended up in hospital but had no serious injuries. He later managed to claim hundreds of thousands of pounds after stating that he had suffered such a traumatic experience that he had contracted agoraphobia and was unable to leave the house. The unlikely part of this story, which did not seem to be flagged up in court, was that he had photographic evidence of his fall because his wife just so happened to be stood next to him carrying a digital camera, which was capable of taking high quality images that could be used as evidence. How very convenient!

• Another lady was able to successfully claim against her workplace after she crashed her car, whilst drunk on her way home from an office party. It really is amazing how the law seems to stand up for people like this who wish to shirk any responsibility for their own actions. Next, she will be suing them for burning the roof of her mouth whilst drinking a cup of coffee in the canteen!

• Another equally outrageous scenario is the well known case of an extremely obese man, who sued an airplane company for not providing a large enough seat for him to fit into. There was a noisy and public confrontation as he tried to board the plane, which ended with him being escorted off by security officers. He claimed that due to the ordeal, he had been mentally damaged and was unable to ever work again due to severe depression. He claimed for loss of earnings and won the case.
